GAZETTE

November 2012

To the Editor:

Victoria is a great place to live and play and we also want it to be a great place to work.  Home based businesses are an important component to the Victoria business community and we want to make  sure your needs are met.

The Business Development Committee is hosting its first ever home based  business meeting on Thursday, November 9th, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Victoria City Hall.  We are planning this to be the first in a series, so if you aren't able to attend this meeting but are still interested, please let me know and we'll include you in future mailings.

Desserts and refreshments will be served.  If you have questions or need additional information, please feel free to contact me.  Best wishes.

To the Editor:

I have been reading in your paper about your trip to Norway.  I am on the Human Rights Commission in Chaska and on Saturday, December 1st, at 4:00 p.m. we are having a tree lighting ceremony in the city park and we want to have a couple of ethnic speakers.  We would love to hear about Norway's culture.  Please let me know your thoughts on this.  Thank you.

To the Editor:

For 15 years, the Minnesota Department of Human Services and its partners have hosted "Celebrate Adoption:  A Circus of the Heart" to commemorate the adoption of children from the foster care system.  But the event is more than a celebration with games, music, prizes, pony rides, fire trucks, and a petting zoo.  It's also an opportunity to learn more about adopting children in the foster care system.

We have 355 children who need adoptive families.  We are looking for adoptive parents who can best meet their needs, who can love them unconditionally, and who can provide them with safe, nurturing homes for a lifetime.

Of the 355 children waiting, 35% are 12 to 18 year-olds and 46% are siblings who need to be adopted together.  Last year, families adopted 540 children from the foster care system.

We're looking for adoptive parents who can provide love, guidance, and structure to children, particularly adolescents and sibling groups who often wait the longest for families.

For more information about adopting children under state guardianship, contact your county social service agency or visit MARN's website, www.mnadopt.org.

To the Editor:

You featured the Drew family in the December 2011 issue of the Gazette in your story entitled "A Room at the Inn."  My sister in law Elaine Drew passed away in August.  We enjoy reading each issue of the Gazette.  Thank you.

To the Editor:

Minnesotans who are not registered to vote at their current address can still register at their polling place on Election Day, Tuesday, November 6th.

Minnesotans should use the online Voter Registration Lookup at www.mnvotes.org to see if their registration is current.  Voters who are already registered to vote at their address do not need to bring additional documentation with them to their polling place.

However, eligible voters who plan to register on Election Day must provide proof of residence.  Voters should decide now which documents they will need on Election Day to register at the polls.

State law requires an eligible voter to be registered at their current address before they are allowed to vote.  Voters need to re-register if they change their names, do not vote for four years, or when they move, even if it is between apartments in the same building.
