CHRISTIAN PEDERSON OF VICTORIA achieved an albatross in October 2018 on the 317-yard Hole #17 at the Deer Run Golf Course in Victoria, using a driver.  An albatross is achieved when a player either aces a par 4 or scores a "2" on a par 5.

The Double Eagle Club, which touts itself as the Worldwide Registry for Double Eagles Scored, states the odds of an albatross are an estimated 6 million to 1.  The chances of becoming one of the couple hundred golfers a year to make a double eagle are better than being killed by a shark (1 in 350 million) or dying from a dog bite (1 in 18 million) but worse than being struck by lightning (1 in 555,000) or, for a woman, having quadruplets without the aid of fertility drugs (1 in 729,000).

Stated Dean Knuth, senior director of the handicap department at the USGA from 1981 to 1997 and now a Golf Digest contributing editor, "Someone has to hit two great shots,  You have to have length and ability.  Only a small percentage of golfers, less than 10%, ever reach a par 5 in two."

HEENIE TIES SCHOOL RECORDS.  Nick Heenie, son of Kevin and Kim Heenie of Victoria, tied Augsburg's single-game record for reception with his 20 catches, tying a mark first set in a 2007 game against Carleton.  Nick's four touchdown receptions -- catches of 75 and nine yards in the first quarter, 21 yards in the second quarter, and a nine-yarder later in the game -- tied a school mark set three previous time in school history.

Heenie, who is leading the MIAC in receiving yardage (992 yards), receiving yardage per game (141.7), and receptions (69), reached the century mark in receiving for the sixth time in his seven games this season, the 14th time in his career, and 13th time in his last 17 games.

Heenie's 275 receiving yards is the second-most in a single game in school history.  He is now tied for fourth in Augsburg history with 28 receiving touchdowns in his career.  His 2,577 career receiving yards are fifth-most in school history, while his 186 career receptions are tied for sixth-most.

NOW OPEN:  BAVARIA AUTO OUTLET.   The singular attractive building on the west end of downtown Victoria is open once again with an even more evident energy and dedication to the customer.  Mike Meadows has been in the business since 1983.  Business is good for Victoria!  Thanks, Mike, for calling the Victoria Gazette.  ~S.O.

ANOTHER GIFT FROM THE VICTORIA LIONS.  Victoria Lions President Dave Lura, left, presented a check for $5,000 to Rene Maes, Executive Director of Camp Sweet Life Adventures.  The donation was highlighted at the Lions meeting on October 8th.  Camp Sweet Life Adventures, founded in 2010, grew out of the need for children with Type 1 Diabetes and their families to establish local support networks.  The goal is to provide a safe environment so kids with diabetes can have an outdoor summer camp experience like any other child.  Camp Sweet Life is located in Madison Lake, Minnesota.

GREAT CROSS COUNTRY MEET.  The Victoria Lions sponsored another great cross country meet on Tuesday, October 2nd, at the Chaska Par 30 golf course.  There was a huge group of Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Junior Varsity "C" runners representing 25 different schools.  We distributed bottled water and over 1,000 Haralson apples to the runners besides working the finish line during the whole event.  The weather was very cool and overcast, but it wasn't raining.

HAMMERSCHLAGEN AT THE VICTORIA BURROW.  Hammerschlagen is a competitive game involving driving a nail into a log.  The concept derives from German games played with a nail and an axe. ~S.O.

SECOND FROM LEFT.  My wife forwarded this picture to me from one of your past papers, most likely in the September 2018 issue from the August 22nd car show in Victoria.  The person that is standing second from left is me, Clint Vilks, versus the named character, Terry Smith -- unless the "Terry Smith" won the St. Victoria Sunset Raffle that I can claim because I look like him.  I do not have a connection other than being the "First Raffle Ticket Buyer" (proudly holding it in the picture) when we were at the car show that day.  I live nearby in Chaska on Adrian Drive, directly across the street from Anne and Scott Lumby.  I was at the car show with Scott.  We go when we can.  Perhaps you know them.  They were longtime Victoria residents.  They frequently rave about their life in Victoria back then.  Have a great day.
