THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY. Photographed through the glass window between the AV Room and the Council Chambers, left to right: Isaac Leif (AV student who works for Victoria), Heidi Harvey (from Tierney Brothers, the company from which the Audio Visual equipment was purchased), City Clerk Jennie Kretsch (who did purchasing for the city), Ray Schleck (from Technology Management Corporation Inc, who helped Jennie with the low-voltage design and bidding process with the Audio Visual).
VICTORIA VIDEO GUY RECEIVES HEFTY ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP Mayor Tom O'Connor invited 17-year old Isaac Leif on March 9th to step out of the Audio Visual room that peers into the new Council Chambers, in order to announce to other councilmembers and audience a happy occurrence -- a large scholarship for the young man. After the City of Victoria opted out of the LMCC (Lake Minnetonka Communication Commission) in 2013, the city hired Isaac in January 2014 to video city council meetings. The son of Ted and Tamra Leif, he is a senior this year at Mound Westonka High School. Isaac will be attending Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, aiming to major in Communications/Digital Media. He received a $7,500 per year Communications/Digital Media scholarship from Carthage. Combined with his Merit Scholarship and Presidential Scholarship, the total scholarship amount over four years will be around $140,000. Both Mayor O'Connor and City Clerk Jennie Kretsch wrote letters of recommendation and reference in support of the city's part time city employee. After the announcement, Mayor O'Connor said to Isaac, "Now get back in there and turn on the tape!"
KOCHIA LANE AND 78TH STREET MAY OR MAY NOT BE COMPLETED IN 2015 Construction of 78th Street and Kochia Lane may or may not be completed in 2015, said City Engineer Cara Geheren on March 23rd. It depends on the city being able to obtain an easement in short order. Cara reported that the road improvements were ordered last year, when the Burau-Lano property had a proposed developer. The city would have worked with the developer to incorporate stormwater management into their system and been part of the development process. "But development is not imminent," said Cara. "We would need to acquire an easement now. We could still construct this year if we get the easement. We could put the [street] project on hold until that property gets a developer, which we don't recommend because 78th Street is in horrible shape. The neighbors along Kochia are also getting weary of the gravel road." She recommended waiting until the next council meeting for additional information or alternatives.
VICTORIA LIBRARY’S GRAND OPENING GREAT ENERGY AND CONVERSATION City Manager Laurie Hokkanen reported on the March 7th Grand Opening of the Victoria Library, which is located on the first floor of the new City Hall building. "It was a great event," she said. "There were 1,017 people who attended. They have a counter. There were 659 items checked out. There were 6,000 books on the opening and 2,000 DVDs. They issued 78 new library cards. Forty people were here for the author's talk. The energy was great. It was fun to be part of the conversation." Said Mayor Tom O'Connor, "This city staff has been incredible -- two grand openings, HEI, the sculpture. We are so darn lucky to have their work on our behalf."
