The Scoop at City Hall |
When we returned to Victoria from our riverboat cruise, I had an unusually large tub of mail waiting for me at the Victoria Post Office. In just ten days away from home, I received hundreds of my March remittance envelopes returned to me with subscription checks inside. I am shocked every year at your response. You are an amazing and honorable readership, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the reciprocity. You understand that I work hard for you and the community. I appreciate your support, your trust, your confidence. You are, for the most part, givers and not takers. You lift my spirits and sustain my courage. I also appreciate your letters, your notes, your many greetings. I've got to be the luckiest editor in the whole world. As you may or may not know, depending on how long you've been reading the Gazette, I much enjoy doing this newspaper. I enjoy being informed and helping you be informed. If you don't know the story and truth of things in this neck of the world, you can't blame it on me. Even if you're very new to this community, as many of you are since new homes are popping up everywhere, you might have already seen that the Victoria Gazette is the most comprehensive compilation of Victoria news, past and present, featuring Victoria residents, businesses, community events, city government, organizations, friends, family, neighbors. Oh, yes, the Gazette also features me and my family on occasion. If we didn't know each other's stories, we'd be a community of strangers. Small town charm doesn't happen by accident. *** I'm also thrilled to feel these warmer temperatures. As a matter of fact, it's warmer here in Minnesota today than it was down in New Orleans only a few days ago. Go, figure! Actually, when we got home from the cool, wet winds on the Gulf, I could feel the start of a cold coming on. My cough was nasty but, thankfully, only lasted a week. What's the trick? Lots of orange juice, lots of water, two Tylenol every three to four hours, and a daily jacuzzi to pound and sweat it out. *** And, yes, Uncle Ron Holtmeier, I'm once again saving all those remittance envelopes for you and your philatelist friends. There are some routines that just go on and on, like family traditions, and assisting stamp collectors is one of them. Give me a couple more months, Ron, so I can bring you the biggest bunch! *** I'm impressed with the number and the interest of Victoria residents who applied in March to be members of the various city committees and commissions. Those who volunteer for these positions are a special breed of people. For one thing, they hardly get noticed or mentioned in the City Scoop pages of the Gazette, for example, because I only "do" the city council meetings. No editor in their right mind would attend all the meetings of the Planning Commission, the Park and Recreation Committee, the Finance Committee, the Lake and Water Quality Advisory Committee, and other task force committees. These committees are responsible for much hard work behind the scenes, but they don't make the decisions. I do feel called to report on their recommendations and, most certainly, on the decisions of the council. That's where the buck stops. It's nice that everybody has their own favorite cup of tea in the city. On that note, I will tell you that part of the individual stories of the committee applicants are located in the city scoop pages of this issue of the Gazette. I find some of their comments riveting and very few of their comments boring or evasive. Altogether, it seems a fine pot of tea is brewing. *** Finally, after many months, a worthwhile movie, "Unplanned," has come to the theaters. But I haven't seen it yet! First I had to finish this issue of the Gazette, and next I must do our income taxes. April 15th is way too close for comfort. When I was a little girl, I used to sit next to my dad at the round oak table in our dining room, and add up columns of numbers for him when he did his income taxes. That was before the days of calculators in rural Minnesota. It's a good memory. Also, I've offered assistance to Patrick Smith to help get a Victoria 55386 zip code for those properties south of Marsh Lake Road, and other properties to be annexed into the City of Victoria. It would be easy for me to walk away from it. Why do I care if all those Victoria properties and Victoria people are identified as Chaska 55318? The answer is simple: "Because I've always cared about common sense and what's best for Victoria." If it doesn't happen, I can live with myself because I at least tried. And then I can go to the movies. |
