GAZETTE

January 2011

To the Editor:

January 22nd, 2010, will mark the 38th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the court decision that has resulted in the destruction of over 55 million unborn lives -- the largest holocaust in the history of mankind.

Let’s take a look at the two “hard questions” that the pro-abortion crowd hurls at the prolife crowd to justify the multimillion-dollar industry of abortion:  What about saving the life of the mother?  And what about cases of rape?

There are cases of where a child has to be delivered early for the sake of the mother’s health.  But in all cases, the effort can be made to save both lives.  Medical science has developed far past the days when killing the child for the sake of the mother is necessary.

There are some extreme cases such as toxic infections where the child cannot be saved.  But that doesn’t mean that the child must be deliberately killed.  Every effort to save the life of the child can be made.  Plus the mother will be much safer in the care of a life-saving hospital team than she would be at an abortion clinic.

Rape is a horrible crime.  The punishment for rapists should be severe.  We should give great compassion and support to the victims of rape.  But in the cases where pregnancy occurs, does this include abortion?

You cannot answer this question honestly without considering the humanity of the unborn child.  Genetic science has shown us the absolute uniqueness of every human embryo at even its earliest stages.  Even though this child’s conception came as the result of a crime, the child is not the criminal.  Does this child deserve the death penalty because of the crime of its father?

The victim of rape has severe emotional pain to deal with.  Is adding the guilt of destroying another innocent victim the solution?  Or does it add even more anguish to the situation?

To the Editor:

If you are interested in doing a possible editorial on Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., may I suggest this angle?

A fair number of multi-generational Carver County residents may see Dr. King National Holiday as “theirs.”  Which is supremely ironic as Reverend King saw himself embracing Jesus’ fundamental teaching that their is no “theirs” or “them.”  There is only  “we.”

Martin Luther King Jr. understood Christ’s wisdom, that when someone suffers from prejudice, the one hated and vilified and discriminated against is not prejudice’s only victim.  The perpetrator of prejudice is also its victim -- perhaps more brutalized, spiritually, for he or she is unaware that within them lies the source of their victimization, of their anger.

And so people of largely European ancestry should indeed celebrate the freedom and redemption won by a movement led by our brother and the Christian martyr, Martin.  Carver County residents should not only take note of the civil rights struggle -- both its challenges and triumphs.  Residents of “The Valley” should come to know of the heroes of the struggle of mostly European ancestry.

People are invited to join Christian communities of the Minnesota River Valley at the Rev. Martin Luther King Celebration at Shepherd of the Hill Church on Monday, January 17th, 7 p.m., 145 Engler Boulevard, Chaska.

Heroic stories will not only inspire, they will further consign to the waste basket that this martyr’s struggle was not for “them,” but for all of us.  Thanks, Sue.

To the Editor:

Hi, Sue.  I was wondering if your kids got on the road back to Tioga or if they are snowed in at Grand Forks.

What a fun night we had once again on New Year’s Eve.  Always so good to be with friends for a good time.  Stay warm and enjoy the day.

         Happy New Year.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Hi, Rosalie.  In fact, Jenny and her family did get stranded for two nights in Grand Forks.  All roads out of Grand Forks on New Year’s Eve -- heading north, south, east, and west -- were closed.  But they were toasty warm and safe in a nice hotel with a swimming pool and free wireless.  They finally got back to Tioga on Sunday, January 2nd.
