The Victoria GAZETTE

November 2013

To the Editor:

I am not certain if you remember me.  My name is Bob Ayotte, Cheryl's husband.  Cheryl ran for Carver County Commissioner this last time around.  She grew pretty fond of Victoria and all the people she met.  You may recall that a number of our children serve in the military, and I spent 33 years serving, so you may understand that Veterans' Day is pretty special for us.  For that reason I am hoping you might be willing to include this article I wrote in your next edition of the Gazette.  Thank you.  Hope you are doing well.

To the Editor:

On behalf of the Victoria Business Owners Association, your participation on Saturday, October 26th, was appreciated.  As with any community event, without volunteers from businesses, local organizations, family, friends, and the support of the City, these events would not be successful.    My personal thanks and congratulations to all of you for making this another wonderful event for the community of Victoria.

To the Editor:

Hello.  This is to inquire about writing regular poetry for your newspaper and/or your website.  The topics of my poems would vary.  The flavor would be whimsical and occasionally serious.  My poems would be on average 12 lines but obviously that could change depending on the content of the particular subject.

I also write numerous types of blogs and articles from sporting events to feature stories.  I am retired from the Rochester MN school district where I was webmaster and English Department writing assistant.  If you see a fit for my services within your organization, please contact me.

To the Editor:

I'd like to thank the Eastern Carver County School District for exploring how technology could best be used in the classrooms through Power Up grants last year.

As a parent and taxpayer, I appreciate that they didn't jump to hand out the latest device.  The teachers that were awarded grants were able to pick the device and software they thought would work best for their individual classroom needs.

I was amazed last spring when I sat in on a Civics Class that was using laptops with Microsoft software, where the students then saved their files in Google Docs.  Google Docs allowed the students to be able to edit someone else's file while the owner of the file was still working on it.  I was impressed that the students were making use of free technology similar to what they would find in industry.

Until last spring, I thought that the testing done in our schools was still with a Number 2 pencil.  When talking with one of the middle school technology teachers, I was surprised to learn that the "2" technology computer classrooms at Pioneer Ridge Middle School (and, in fact, all computers used for instruction) were needed for testing.  The regular classes are regularly displaced on testing days.  Computers are not an extra, but are used daily by many classes.

Our school system has wisely explored and tested the technology needed to best educate our children for today's world.  They have also researched how our district compares to other districts.  That information is available on the district's website.  It is my hope that when this paper is in your hands that we have also heard that both referendum questions have been passed and our schools and community will be stronger for it.

To the Editor:

My greetings, especially to golfers.  Want you to know we are closing the course on the night of Sunday, November 3rd.  I'm often asked why we close if there's a possibility of nice weather in November.  Well, in a few days it will be dark by 5 p.m.  If a typical round take four hours, then the last tee time is 1 p.m.  If we have our usually frosty mornings, we can't start tee times until 10 a.m. (if we're lucky).

Also, because we blow out the irrigation system, we can't water and heal up divots, etc.  So, to provide you the quality of turf that you expect next spring, we shut her down
